Artillery Project

Artillery at the Crossroads

As part of the Foundation’s plan to expand upon the great interpretive work that was done in the 1990s at Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield we are excited to announce our artillery project.

We aim to place multiple artillery pieces across the battlefield, positioned to interpret the historical placements and strategies used by both Union and Confederate artillery batteries. In partnership with renowned artillery expert Duffy Neubauer of the Starkville Civil War Arsenal, we are committed to ensuring historical accuracy and authenticity in this project. This addition will offer visitors a more vivid and tangible understanding of the battlefield’s strategic landscape.

Why Artillery?

Few features are more iconic or evocative on a battlefield than the sight of cannons. They serve as immediate markers of significance, signaling that this land was once a scene of historic conflict. Their silent presence reminds us that this land once echoed with the sounds of war and the bravery of those who fought it—a hallowed place that deserves remembrance.

Why Brice's Crossroads?

Artillery played a decisive role in many Civil War battles.  Cannons, howitzers, and other artillery pieces provided both offensive and defensive support, creating a powerful presence on the battlefield. Brice’s Crossroads stands out as a unique example, showcasing a range of artillery for a battle of its scale. The Union cavalry employed mobile mountain howitzers among others, while the Confederates implemented an audacious artillery charge, creating a dynamic and impactful display of artillery tactics on this historic field.

Morton’s artillery charge at Brice’s Crossroads stands as a testament to the bold tactics and resilience of the Confederate forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest. Despite Union forces possessing numerical and technological advantages, Morton’s artillery effectively disrupted their lines, marking a critical point in the battle. This audacious move of advancing artillery—unconventional and risky—turned the tide, demonstrating the powerful synergy between bravery and tactical ingenuity on the battlefield.
