“The Papers of John A. Rawlins: Uncovering the life of Ulysses S. Grant’s ‘Chief of Staff’ through his papers”
Dr. Semmes will talk about General John A. Rawlins papers at the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and the relationship between Grant and Rawlins before, during, and after the Civil War.
Colonel (Ret) Jim Garrett served on active duty as a Judge Advocate in the US Army for just over 28 years, with the majority of his service in the operational Army. He is a graduate of the Army War College and his last assignment was as the Dean of The Judge Advocate General’s School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jim is from Mississippi and is a graduate from Delta State and the University of Mississippi School of Law, he now permanently resides in North Mississippi.
Jim has conducted battlefield tours and military staff rides at some of America’s great historic sites like Gettysburg and Antietam.

NEWS and UPDATES:
September 30th, 2024 – “We had an encouraging turnout for our September meeting, and the decision was made to move the meeting time up to enable those who attend from further away to get back home from the meetings earlier. So come at 6:00 next Tues. evening for refreshments, and we’ll plan to start the program at 6:30.”
January 14th, 2025 – We enjoyed a wonderful reunion with our friends from the Brice’s Crossroads Foundation as their Vice President delivered an engaging program on the Alabama Brigade’s role in the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads.
February 11th, 2025 – Mark delivered an insightful presentation on the Battle of Tupelo/Harrisburg, highlighting its significance in securing Union supply lines during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. He discussed the Union victory’s strategic impact and its role in preventing Confederate disruptions. Members engaged in a thoughtful discussion, and upcoming events were announced.

Unless otherwise noted the Starkville Civil War Roundtable meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Golden Triangle Planning and Development building located at 106 Miley Dr., Starkville, MS 39759. Please come 6:00pm to enjoy refreshments and claim your seat as programs begin promptly at 6:30pm!
